Palácio da Alvorada

The image below shows an aerial view of the Palácio da Alvorada, residence of the President of the Republic of Brazil. For a broader view, check out this map of Brasília seen from 10 miles high.

Read more about the Palácio da Alvorada.

Palácio da Alvorada Palácio da Alvorada means "Palace of the Dawn". The name was given by Juscelino Kubitscheck; he used to say that "Brasília is the dawn of a new epoch in the History of Brazil".

This Palace is one of the residences of the President of the Republic; the other residence is the Granja do Torto, a kind of country house.

Officially, the President works at the Palácio do Planalto, and has residence at the Palácio da Alvorada (this is different from, e.g., the USA, where the White House is both work place and residence of the President of the USA).

The blue rectangle is a swimming pool. There is no football field here; President Lula, who is fan and practioner of football, invites friends to Granja do Torto to play soccer.

The Palácio da Alvorada sits by one of the banks of Lago Paranoá. There is a distance of 12 km (7.5 mi) between the Palace of Alvorada and the Palace of Planalto (check this map to have an idea).

The straight vertical line is one of the avenues which leads to the Palace; the main gate is located here, and is as close as a non-invited visitor can get to the Palace. The gray area is a parking loot for visitors.
