Bridge JK

Below, aerial photos of the area around the Palácio da Alvorada and the JK bridge. For a broader view, check out this map of Brasília seen from 10 miles high.

Alvorada and JK bridge This image shows the Three Powers Square (left of image), the Alvorada Palace (upper right corner) and the Bridge Juscelino Kubitschek usually referred to as JK Bridge (the white line, lower right corner). The dark area is the Lago Paranoá.

The distance between the Palácio do Planalto (where the President of the Republic works) and the Palácio da Alvorada (the residence of the President) is about 13 km.

The bridge connects the core of the Pilot Plan to the southern part of the lake (one of the most exclusive areas of Brasília); the bridge saves dwellers from that area a good driving.

The JK Bridge won an award from the Engineer's Society of Pennsylvania in 2003.
The Gustav Lindenthal Medal was awarded to the designers of the bridge "for a single, recent outstanding achievement demonstrating harmony with the environment, aesthetic merit and successful community participation"; check out the Pennsylvania Engineers site.
